May 17-19 - ΣAE Brothers win at Regional Golf Tournament in Pensacola, FL

Five brothers attended the Province Epsilon Golf Tournament and Leadership School at Perdido Bay Golf Club in Pensacola, Florida. The tournament began on Friday, where John Morvant, Jack Konas, Wheeler Briggs, and Thomas Thornycroft played in the 4-man competition and Lee Engerson played as an individual. Following Fridays round of golf the brothers met with Tracy Anderson (Province Archon), William Winstead (Regional Director), and Brandon Weghorst (Associate Executive Director of Communications) for a leadership training seminar and Q&A. Saturdays round was an exciting day with both Lee Engerson and the 4-man team in the lead. Lee Engerson ended up finishing second place overall, shooting a total of 147 over the two days, he was within just 3 strokes of the lead. Lee also won the longest drive hole with a drive of 325 yards. The brothers that played in the 4-man competition finished in first place, they shot a total of 136 to win by 8 strokes. Congratulations to all brothers that attended this year’s tournament. February 20-23 - ΣAE Participates in Gameday for Heroes

On February 20th, Sigma Alpha Epsilon hosted a charity Bingo Night as part of the first night of Heroes Week to benefit Gameday for Heroes. Providing wounded and active duty servicemen the opportunity to attend college-sporting events, Gameday for Heroes is a tremendous organization giving back to the men and women that protect our freedom. Thanks in part to the coordinating efforts of Chapter President John Morvant and Philanthropy Chair Neal Davis, our event alone hosted over 300 students and raised $1,500 for the organization.Gameday for Heroes website

A quote from our President, John Morvant, on the week long event:

“Being able to meet and interact with the people at Gameday for Heroes meant so much more than just putting a check in the mail because we could really see how much this meant to them. We were looking for an under-funded organization that could really use our help, and we could not have found a more deserving group.”

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856 by eight students who wished to form an organization built on brotherhood. As the size of the brotherhood grew, so did its boundaries. Soon chapters were formed at other southern universities.

With the start of the Civil War in 1861, most brothers answered the call to arms. At the end of that tragic war, only one Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter survived. But the strength and power of SAE could not be denied and soon, more chapters were formed.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon soon expanded from the South into the North and the West, becoming the first southern fraternity to do so. With this expansion, the values of the True Gentleman, that the fraternity was molded after, found a home on other campuses.

As early as 1927, Sigma Alpha Epsilon established its 125th chapter, but the Depression held its grip on the country. Even with the economic woes of the time, Sigma Alpha Epsilon managed to construct the college fraternity's national headquarters. It was built in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago, and was named the Levere Memorial Temple. The Temple remains the headquarters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

In 1935, Sigma Alpha Epsilon once again held true to its reputation as the leading innovator of the fraternity system by developing an annual leadership school. The school brings together SAE brothers from across the nation for a week long school that teaches leadership skills. It also allows brothers to find out what other chapters are doing in such areas as pledge programming, rush, social programming, scholarship and more. It now has over 250,000 graduates and nearly every other fraternity has copied the concept.
